Internal and External Pipe Thread Tool with Hex Shank

I got this LINGIGAOUT internal / external pipe threading tool set to assist me with my PVC plumbing home repair projects and other DIY projects.

I am not a plumber. However I do most of the plumbing for my house. I quickly ordered this set of threaders as soon as I saw them. I believe they will be a great addition to my tools. I have not tested their ability to make a leak proof connection yet, but that is not all you can use them for.

Their plumbing advantage. When you glue the connections together if you need to remove the connection you have to cut the pipe and splice it. Since this allows you to thread the connection together I would think you could unthread it if needed. Some special PVC pipe glues can work below 40 degrees F, but the ones I generally use will not. I always have almost a full can of primer and glue left over so I have to find a place to store them safely where they stay at the proper temperature. To be honest I usually just buy a new can of primer and glue.

It works BUT you need to use this on the lowest speed on your drill. The drill is fast and it can actually strip the thread that this was intended to make. My 1st try it completely strip the threads but then I use it at a slower speed and it works. You have to do the guess work and know when to stop the drill before it begin to cut too much.

It works well with patience and practice. The quality of the parts is well made and sharp.

I decided to try these threading tools due to a couple of difficult plumbing situations on my property. Two PVC pipes broken off at ground level. One in concrete, the other in dirt. I needed to thread the inside of the one in concrete and was hoping to thread the outside of the other one. The inside threader worked pretty well as you can see by the photo.

I ordered this set out of curiosity and for another repair option. But after trying this a couple times on a piece of schedule 40 PVC, I have to say I’m disappointed. First thing that stood out is the shank used to connect the die to the drill is removable so that it can swap to the male or female side of the die. Because the 1/4” square shank loosely slips into the die without any locking feature, it easily falls off. This loose fit makes using it cumbersome as it requires another level of coordination to keep it attached. A simple steel ball and spring like found on ratchet could have easily remedied this issue.

The dies are sharp and cut well when they get a bite in the material. I say that because it took some finesse and pressure to get it to bite. When the die bites into the material, it generates a lot of rotating force on the pipe. I had it clamped into a vice and it still turned the pipe at the end of the cut and the die quickly gets hot.

I have threaded hundreds if not thousands of metal pipes however the few times in the past that I have attempted PVC has not been successful for various reasons. That being said I was still excited at the possibilities and time savings of this tool. I think a little bit of practice is really the key with this set.
It worked pretty smoothly cutting external threads on both 1/2 and 3/4. I found it was even easier if I sprayed the pipe end with a little WD-40 and chamfered the end a little bit to help it get started. I don't know if not having a ball detent to hold the bit in the fitting is just a cost savings or if it's an intentional design, but I can foresee where that could cause frustration if you're in an awkward location trying to use this.
I then grabbed some 1/2 and 3/4 fittings expecting to be able to cut internal threads on the fittings. That does not appear to be how these are designed to be used. Both size fittings will just sit onto the die. I did however find that I could use the 1/2 tap to cut internal threads inside a 3/4 pipe. Again practice is key, the first time the threads were a little loose so I cut it off and tried again, much better fit the second time even without ptfe tape. I assume the 3/4 will cut internal on a 1" pipe but I didn't have any to test it. I did try drilling into a 2" pipe with a 7/8" spade and tapped that hole. I had mixed success with that, but might work ok for crafts or non plumbing projects.
